    Under the direction of the Program Director of the Hyperbaric Medicine Department, the Hyperbaric Medical Technician administers hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Physician. Operates and maintains the hyperbaric chamber(s) and associated systems and equipment. Assists in the delivery of patient care appropriate to the level of his/her medical training.Prepares the hyperbaric chamber, equipment, medicine and materials as needed for patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy.


    Operates, maintains and ensures the safety of the hyperbaric facility and all associated systems and equipment.


    Explains purpose and procedure of hyperbaric treatment of the patient.


    Carries out hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment protocols as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Physician on the Physician Orders. Ensures patient appointments for HBOT and WC are coordinated to maximize treatment protocols.


    Observes the patients and the hyperbaric systems during the course of hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Reports unusual occurrences to hyperbaric physician and records patients' condition.


    Assists with transport of patients as required.


    Reports treatments to be conducted and condition of patients to relief personnel.


    Performs and documents Transcutaneous Oxymetry Monitoring (TCOM) on patients to justify HBOT or at the time of HBO treatment to validate the efficacy of treatment.


    Documents HBOT patient care.


    Verifies H&P including labs, CXR and EKG results prior to diving.


    Glucometer control checklist daily.


    Patient pre-dive Checklist completed daily.


    Knowledgeable in dressing changes and supplies needed for the changes.


    Provides documentation or credentials of graduation from an accredited school of EMT (Basic), Certified Nurse Aide, Certified Medical Assistant, Military Corpsman, and Diver Medic.  Some medical training and background required. Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) preferred.  Minimum of one year of clinical hyperbaric systems operation is preferred.  Qualification as a U.S. Navy Deep Sea Diving Medical Technician or Special Operations Technician will be considered as equivalent. Must attend a UHMS approved hyperbaric course.

     Must possess good verbal and written communications skills.

     Ability to carry out detailed written or verbal instructions independently.

     Performs moderate physical work exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a regular basis and up to 75 pounds of force on an occasional basis, performing such activities as fingering, grasping, carrying, lifting, holding, reaching, opening, pulling, pushing, speaking, hearing, walking, and writing.

     Performs the described duties through the use of appropriate equipment.

     Must have the ability to provide continuous patient care without leaving the patient unless an authorized attendee is present.
