Under the direction of the Program Director of the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, the Hyperbaric Medical Technician administers hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Physician/Nurse Practitioner. Operates and maintains the hyperbaric chamber(s) and associated systems and equipment in accordance with all Hospital policies and procedures. Assists in the delivery of patient care appropriate to the level of his/her medical training.
Prepares the hyperbaric chamber, equipment, medicine and materials as needed for patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Operates, maintains and ensures the safety of the hyperbaric facility and all associated systems and equipment.
Explains purpose and procedure of hyperbaric treatment of the patient.
Carries out hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment protocols as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Physician/Nurse Practitioner .
Ensures patient appointments for HBOT and WC are coordinated.
Monitors and Observes the patients and the hyperbaric systems during the course of hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Reports unusual occurrences to hyperbaric physician and records patients' condition.
Assists with transport of patients as required.
Reports treatments to be conducted and condition of patients to relief personnel.
Performs and documents Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitoring (TCOM) on patients as prescribed by physician/Nurse Practitioner
Documents HBOT patient care in the medical record.
Verifies H&P including labs, CXR and EKG results prior to treatment.
Monitors Glucometer Control Checklist daily, as appropriate to credentials.
Performs Patient Pre-Treatment Checklist daily.
Knowledgeable in dressing changes and supplies needed for the changes.
Performs vital signs and glucose tests prior to HBO treatment, as appropriate to credentials.
Has NYS licensure documentation or credentials of: graduation from an accredited Nursing school, as an (LPN) or evidence of Certified Hyperbaric Technician( CHT) or EMT/EMT-CC/EMT-P certification course. One year of clinical experience. Must attend a UHMS approved hyperbaric course within one year of hire.
Must possess good verbal and written communications skills.
Ability to carry out detailed written or verbal instructions independently.
Performs the described duties through the use of appropriate equipment.
Must have the ability to provide continuous patient care without leaving the patient unless an authorized attendee is present.
